Casual ACP for Health Canada Contract (Clinic Setting)

This position will be a selection process for a currently awarded contract. APL has been successful in the RFP process and awarded the contract from Health Canada, set to commence December 1, 2018. The areas to be served on a rotating basis by the ACP in the Clinical setting are Fox Lake, Garden River, and Jean D’or Prairie. Travel would be arranged or credit provided.

General Description:

Advanced Care Paramedic (ACP) will provide “on-site” medical care as required by Health Canada, Alberta Health Services, Occupational Health and Safety, and the Alberta College of Paramedics. This position will be responsible for the application of accepted principles of treatment to sustain life, prevent medical injuries or illnesses from becoming worse and promoting recovery using available equipment, supplies, facilities, and services to provide immediate pre-hospital care to the ill or injured. This position will report to the appropriate APL Team Lead or designate and will be closely monitored by higher trained practitioners such as Nurse Practitioner (NP), Physician Assistant (PA), or in some cases, the APL Medical Director.

This position will monitor and work as a team with other trained medical practitioners such as Registered Nurses, ACPs and PCPs.

This position will work shift rotations approved by the client, and will generally be one week or longer in duration as a casual call in basis.

Responsibilities:

  • Assess the extent of injuries or illness to determine medical treatment
  • Comfort and reassure patients
  • Obtain the patient’s medical history, if possible
  • Perform and interpret diagnostic procedures such as taking vital signs and testing glucose levels
  • Administer pre-hospital emergency care including cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), oxygen, bandaging, splinting, assisting in child birth, and the treatment of trauma patients
  • Maintain airways with intubation and surgical airways
  • Use an external defibrillator and bag valve mask resuscitator
  • Provide manual cardiac defibrillation and external pacing
  • Perform and interpret diagnostic procedures such as monitor vital signs and interpret lab values such as ABG’s, Lytes
  • Initiate, monitor, and maintain blood and blood product transfusions
  • Operate sophisticated equipment in advanced life-support ambulances, medevac aircraft or other advanced life support environments
  • Administer medications for the treatment of medical conditions and management of acute pain
  • Initiate and maintain intraosseous infusions
  • Urinary catheterization
  • Monitor chest tubes
  • Use a spinal immobilization devices and traction splints
  • Transport patients to hospital or other medical facilities for further care
  • Document and record the nature of injuries and treatment provided
  • Assist hospital personnel as required
  • Provide detailed report to Medical Director, if required
  • Identifies and reports safety concerns
  • Demonstrate commitment to Continuing Medical Education
  • Participate in EMS training sessions to maintain active employee status
  • Successfully completed training as a Advanced Care Paramedic from an approved program
  • Experience working in the Emergency Medical Services field in Ground, Flight, or Industrial
  • Current Unrestricted Practice Permit with the Alberta College of Paramedics
  • Current CPR, ITLS, ACLS, PALS, NRP
  • Driver’s License
  • Ability to remain firm, reassuring and efficient in moments of crises
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Able to compile information to complete reports

  • Able to effectively communicate both verbally and in writing

PHYSICAL DEMANDS/WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Work will be performed both indoors and outdoors
  • Work is physically demanding, required to lift loads weighing over 20 kg
  • Work in stressful circumstances
  • Work may expose potentially hazardous biological agents
  • Work shifts that include evenings, weekends, holidays and may work up to 24 hr shifts
