Emergency Medical Technician – Ambulance (EMT-A)

Job Description:

Emergency Medical Technician – Ambulance (EMT-A) will provide “on-site” medical care as required by Alberta Health Services, Occupational Health and Safety, and the Alberta College of Paramedics. This position will be responsible for the application of accepted principles of treatment within scope of practice and under approved medical control protocols to sustain life, prevent medical injuries or illnesses from becoming worse and promoting recovery using available equipment, supplies, facilities, and services to provide immediate pre-hospital care to the ill or injured.

This position will work from APL’s client project worksites in Western Canada or APL Base Operations in Peace River or Edmonton and will report to the appropriate APL Divisional (Ground, Flight, or Industrial) Supervisor or designate and will be closely monitored by higher trained practitioners such as Emergency Medical Technologist – Paramedic (EMT-P), Nurse Practitioner (NP), Physician Assistant (PA), or in some cases, the APL Medical Director.

This position will work shift rotations approved by the client, and within the Employment Standards Code (ESC). An employee may work a shift length from a minimum of twelve (12) hours (either days or nights), or a twenty-four hour (24) on-call. There are a variety of shift rotations that this position may work which are specific to each APL division (Ground, Flight, or Industrial) and industry. Shift length and rotations will be communicated in advance of your employment and/or project start date.


  • Assess the extent of injuries or illness to determine medical treatment
  • Comfort and reassure patients
  • Obtain the patient’s medical history, if possible
  • Perform and interpret diagnostic procedures such as taking vital signs and testing glucose levels
  • Administer pre-hospital emergency care including cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), oxygen, bandaging, splinting, assisting in child birth, and the treatment of trauma patients
  • Maintain airways with basic airway control and utilize and apply blind insertion airway devices
  • Use a semi-automatic or automatic external defibrillator
  • Assist with the operation of sophisticated equipment in advanced life-support ambulances, medevac aircraft or other advanced life support environments
  • Use a spinal immobilization devices and traction splints
  • Transport patients to hospital or other medical facilities for further care
  • Document and record the nature of injuries and treatment provided
  • Assist hospital personnel as required
  • Initiate and maintain intravenous infusions without medications or blood products
  • Perform cardiac monitoring
  • Administer specified medications
  • Assist paramedics (where there are combined services)
  • Provide detailed report to Medical Director, if required
  • Maintain records of work assignment, vehicle mileage, repairs, fuel, and other vehicle expenses
  • Identifies and reports safety concerns
  • Maintain ambulances, mobile treatment centers, and other emergency fleet vehicles
  • Ensure emergency fleet vehicles are properly equipped and are fully supplied
  • Demonstrate commitment to Continuing Medical Education
  • Participate in EMS training sessions to maintain active employee status

Education & Experience:

  • Successfully completed training as an Emergency Medical Technician – Ambulance (EMT-A) from an approved program
  • Experience working in the Emergency Medical Services field in Ground, Flight, or Industrial
  • Registered with the Alberta College of Paramedics
  • Current CPR, and ITLS/PHTLS
  • Must have a valid Class 4 Drivers License for Flight and Ground Ambulance positions only
  • Must have a valid Class 5 Drivers License for Industrial positions only
  • Must provide an acceptable drivers abstract of the last 3 yrs of driving history
  • Must provide documentation of all current immunizations
  • Must provide a Criminal Record Check
  • Must provide a valid Canadian Passport for Flight and Ground Ambulance positions only
